Styles of Legal Recruiting Part I : Market Focus

A recruiter with a market focus will spend hours a day researching the field. He will read numerous legal newspapers, study firms websites, and search for job openings. He will try to find out all he can about the market and any changes. Theoretically, this style emphasizes the market as a whole as opposed to focusing on individual law firms.

The recruiter will identify law firms which say they have openings as well as those that he feels have the demand for an opening although the firm does not particularly claim they are in need. Job postings will be placed and candidates interviewed. The recruiter will make decisions on candidates based on current jobs to measure fit, past jobs to view strengths, and potential jobs. He will then submit the candidates to the law firms.

With a market focus, the candidate is going to be assisted in applying to the majority of institutions where work is available. New jobs are uncovered that have not been previously approached, and therefore, competition is less. In addition, because of the broad focus, the candidate has many choices about where they would like to work.

However, since research is the priority, there is distant relationship with candidates and firms. This is turn results in a lower percentage of interviews from submitted applications. Lastly, companies may become annoyed with unsolicited job applicants.
