Career Options for Someone Who Wants a Law Degree but Does Not Want to Practice Law

Most people automatically assume that someone who gets a JD (a law degree) wants to practice some type of law. Although this is an understandable assumption, it is not always true. There are many career paths that someone with a law degree can take that do not involve practicing law. Some of these career options may require other training, however, while other careers may not.

One career option for people who want a JD but who do not want to practice law is in politics and government. Although a JD is not required to take part in government, it helps. Because government is based on laws, having formal legal training can help someone better understand how government and politics function and how to navigate through them efficiently and effectively.

Another career option that such an individual has is a job in a corporate working on mergers and acquisitions, although a MBA may be helpful or even required for positions of this nature. Corporations looking at mergers and acquisitions have a legal team, but someone who has a JD but is not a certified lawyer can provide other assistance. For example, such an individual can provide larger understanding of mergers and acquisitions and their effects on a company.

These are only some of the career options that someone who has a JD but who does not want to practice law can choose from. Companies often hire recruiters to find unconventional candidates, in fact.
