Texas Legal and Professional RecruitersRamifications of Lying on a Resume For the proper functioning of society, honesty is important in every area of society. The job world is no exception. One location in the job world that people need to be honest is in the job application process. More specifically, people should not lie on their resumes. This may seem like a blatantly obvious statement; of course no one should lie. Some people, however, may still be tempted to lie. In their desire to get a job, they may fake some or all of the information on their resume. When people are considering lying on a resume, though, they should keep in mind all of the possible ramifications of their action. One obvious result of lying on a resume is that if an individual is caught having lied on the resume, then the individual will most likely be fired. For one thing, no employer (or individual, for that matter) likes being lied to. They feel that their trust has been violated and taken advantage of. Moreover, the hiring process is supposed to be about merit. If they allow someone who lied on a resume to keep a job, that sends a message to others that it is okay to lie on a resume. That will encourage more people to lie on their resumes, attracting unqualified individuals. Another ramification of lying on a resume is that no other employer would want to hire the individual who falsified his resume. Often times, employers communicate with one another, and they may let each other know about the individual who lied. As a result, the individual may have a problem being hired anywhere else. Finally, a third ramification is more indirect. If an individual who is unqualified for a position lies on a resume and is offered the position, she may have difficulty performing at work. The fact that she lied on the resume implies that she was unqualified for the position, that she did not have the skills and/or experience necessary for the position. It is unsurprising that she would have trouble with her job. In turn, the individual may end losing her job anyways because she did not perform well. Lying on a resume is a poor decision in general. It can severely backfire on the individual who lies.
