Tips for Older Job Seekers

Ideally older employees would be respected for their years of hard work and valuable experience. All too often, however, they just find themselves struggling to find jobs in competitive, youth oriented markets. If you feel that your age is putting you at a disadvantage in your job search, consider using some of these tips.

First, make sure your resume only has relevant information. For example, you’ll want to list any college or university you attended, but you not have to include your graduation years. You do not have to list your entire work history, either. Just focus on recent jobs that are relevant to the position you want now.

Second, be prepared to counteract some irritating stereotypes. Your prospective employers may be assuming that you are uninformed about new technology, unwilling to adapt to change, or unable to work at the same rate as someone younger. Don’t get defensive, but do highlight accomplishments and skills that prove these stereotypes false.

Third, be informed about your rights. Discriminating against applicants over the age of 40 is illegal in the US. This means that during a job interview, you do not have to answer questions about your age, date of birth, or any other details that may reveal your age. You may have to confirm being old enough to work full time, but that likely won’t be an issue.
