If you are at the top of your law school graduating class, the job market welcomes you. However, for more average students, finding employment as a lawyer can be very difficult. Due to the enormous loans which need to be repaid, graduates are desperately in need of immediate income.

The first year’s grades are crucial, as many firms recruit during the second year of law school. However, for those who aren’t recruited, tough times may be ahead. Many law schools devote a large portion of time preparing students for big firms, neglecting the vast majority of students who will go to midsize and smaller practices. Students who are not offered positions are encouraged to take clerkships with judges for a year. This way they can start to pay back their debt while still gaining experience. Unfortunately, many law firms request candidates to start immediately, which can be troublesome when there are still several months left in a clerkship.

Legal recruiters recommend that graduates look into contract work. This generally involves temping at a law firm that needs extra assistance for a particularly large project. Although some graduates feel this work is insignificant, it is better than nothing. When a potential employer sees that you graduated two years ago but have yet to do any work in the legal arena, it does not look good. In addition, contract work can be relatively lucrative. A firm might be reluctant to hire associates; the idea of hiring help only when you need it is much more appealing.
