The Biggest Resumé Mistakes

A resumé is supposed to be an asset. However, it can also serve as a huge detriment to a job seeker. While most people tend to focus on the technical aspects when writing a resumé, such as formatting and spelling, there is a more important issue. A resumé should showcase a person’s accomplishments, not feature a list which matches a job description. It needs to show results, not positions held.

If you are applying for a position, it is a given that you have the basic skills to perform the position, or you would not be applying. Therefore, it is important to highlight how you worked in your past position to strengthen the company as a whole, not just your job title. Does your support of others in the company have any part of their success? It is important to include large accomplishments which are not limited to your job description.

Do not write a novel. To keep the resumé concise, center it on accomplishments, rather than responsibilities. Resumés are generally skimmed for 6-8 seconds. It is important to list names of companies, years, and promotions. Also, if a job title is complex, simplify it.

If you have difficulty finding ways which you have contributed to your position, reevaluate your path. Are you in the right position? You deserve a job where you can grow and find a rewarding career.
