Choosing Your First Job

One mistake that many of these recent graduates make is to analyze the job market and go into any field that is lucrative and fast growing. On the surface, this seems like a clearly logical choice. Who wouldn’t want to work in a well-paying and quickly developing field? There is a catch to this strategy, however, that many people fail to consider.

The truth is that just because a job pays well does not mean it is the right fit for you. In the long term, your career can be negatively affected if you go into a field where your talents are not being put to their best use. In the short term, working at a job that one does not find interesting or rewarding can create unnecessary amounts of stress, dissatisfaction and even depression.

Many career experts recommend taking time after graduation to really focus on one’s self and one’s long term goals. This is not a quick or easy process. In the meantime, you may even have to take a job that doesn’t particularly interest you just to pay the bills. However, you can get through this easily if you know you have better plans and the skills to see them through.

During this period of evaluation, ask yourself what your greatest strengths and weaknesses are. What kind of job would play on your strengths and allow you to work on your weaknesses? What do you want out of your career? Do not be afraid to contact people in the fields that interest you. Many professionals are happy to give advice and guidance to recent graduates.
