Finding the Ideal Job

How do you know if a job is a good fit? While there are many resources available to give you specifics on a company, the best source of information can be your interview.

The People Factor

Evaluate your potential boss. Do you get along well? This person often is a large determining factor as to whether you will be happy. If you have trouble meshing with the supervisor from the start, chances are these difficulties will continue down the road.

How do you feel about your potential colleagues? There are a lot of people who do not like their actual job but enjoy the people they work with. The same can be true in the opposite direction. The people one works with often far outweigh the actual tasks involved when it comes to job satisfaction. Try to get to know your potential coworkers before accepting a job. Take any red flags seriously.

The Self Factor

Be careful not to be too eager. Often times the hunt for a job interferes with one’s ability to judge if it is really worth the pursuit. The emphasis of the game turns into winning rather than finding a compatible job, and people will find themselves in positions they would not have accepted from the get go. Do not try to land just any job. The organization has to be a correct fit for your prosper in it.

Know your priorities and values. Do you work best autonomously? Will you require flexibility? By placing these needs upfront in the interview, it is easier to assess the appropriateness of a job. The process must be thought of as a courtship – not a competition to be won.

If you are forced to take a job due to current circumstances such as finances, have an exit plan. Do not stay at a place which is not fostering your growth.
