Interview Strategy

An interview should not be warfare of firing questions back and forth. Conversation should be friendly and natural. Therefore, the best way to prepare is to come with a collection of stories which highlight your business and personal life.

Competency-based as opposed to traditional interviews are becoming more common today. The main difference is a traditional interview is based on knowledge and skills where a competency-based interview centers on a person’s character to determine if they are a fit for the corporation. These character traits are termed “behavioral competencies.”

A competency-based interviewer will want to know about past actions, so it is good to prepare stories of evidence. The employer wants to know whether you will be an asset, meaning make the company money, a team player, and if you will fit in.

The best way for the interviewer to receive answers to the above questions, is for you to take the initiative. Keep you stories concise; about 30 to 90 seconds should be sufficient. Make sure the store is relevant to the point. Stories should be about actions and initiative you took in the past. An example of how you contributed to your employer making more money is excellent. Also, a story about a crisis from which you rebounded will highlight your competency. These stories will help the interviewee have a better picture of you as an employee.
