Texas Legal RecruitersJob Search Rules that were Made to be Broken We’ve all heard that there are a number of rules for applying for jobs that should never be broken. While this can be true for some things, there are a number of job search rules that can be broken. Rule Number 1: Never try for an interview with a company that isn’t hiring This rule has an exception. If it is your life-long dream to work for a specific company but they don’t specifically say they are hiring at this exact moment, there is no harm in setting up an informational interview with someone who has the ability to supply more information about the company. Not only will this give you more information about the company, but it will help with networking and perhaps will help you learn about possible opportunities in the future. Rule Number 2: Keep your résumé to one page Entry-level applicants with only a few years of experience at anything should stick to a one-page résumé as no one really wants to read three pages of irrelevant filler. For job seekers with five years of experience or more, one page may not be enough to showcase all of a person’s relevant accomplishments. In this instance, it is acceptable to use additional pages to describe work history and experience. Rule Number 3: Avoid sending a résumé with fancy formatting While this is generally sound advice, an uncluttered, plain résumé may not cut it. If a person is applying to a creative position, like graphic design, a résumé needs to separate a person from the competition. It is true that a résumé needs to be uncluttered but it does not need to be plain.
