Styles of Legal Recruiting Part II: Matchmaking
The matchmaker will spend time getting to know a
particular law firm. Over time, a strong bond of trust will develop,
and the recruiter will become knowledgeable about the types of people
who would best fit the firm. The recruiter will focus on the
firm’s criteria in his search. He will use minimal
advertizing and spotlight ideal candidates. He then will refer his
favorite candidate to the law firm for an interview.
This style is the most traditional type of recruiting.
The recruiter knows exactly what the firm is looking for and has a
relationship with the firm that allows his candidates to land
interviews. The recruiter does not represent a multitude of candidates
but rather specializes in only a few. Even if there are many
opportunities available, the recruiter will only refer the candidate to
the couple of firms they feel have the best fit.
Because of their tight relationship with the law firms,
matchmakers often know about the job openings in the firm before other
recruiters do. Since the recruiter has taken time to get to know both
parties, he is knowledgeable of the candidate’s skill set and
the types of people the law firm is interested in. Therefore, he has an
advantage when placing a candidate as he has the necessary background
information to make a good match.
Due to the small number of candidates a recruiter works
with, he may miss many skilled people in the field who would be good
applicants for a firm. In addition, the small quantity of law firms
with which they work, results in the recruiter finding less job
openings.
