Texas Legal RecruitersThings that Do Not Belong on a Résumé Many people have the idea that including anything and everything about their personal history is the best way to get a résumé noticed. Because of this, many résumés become too long and are ignored just because they have too much information in them. There are a certain number of things that do not belong in a résumé. Present Date The date does not belong on a résumé. It should be included in the cover letter that is submitted with the résumé and, as such, is not necessary for the résumé as well. Picture A picture of the applicant should only be submitted for modeling or theater positions. Any other instances make the applicant look a bit unprofessional, as though they’re trying to be hired based on looks. If the résumé is received well, an interview will clear up all problems of not knowing what the applicant looks like. Race, Religion, Political Affiliation Unless the ad to which a person is responding specifically asks for a Democrat or Republican or Libertarian, these things do not belong on a résumé. They can be included only if one of these factors is the main thrust of the résumé or is a Bona Fide Occupational Qualification. Personal Data Height, weight, and marital status do not generally answer any questions about a person’s work experience or ability to perform the job for which they’re applying. As a rule, don’t include them. Salary History or Requirements These items are frequently requested by a potential employer. If they are, they should be included in the cover sheet, not the résumé. References References should go on a separate “References” page, not the main part of the résumé. This page should be developed and professional looking as well.
