Texas Legal RecruitersRésumés Résumés, which are similar to curriculum vitae (CV), are documents that have a summary or list of a person’s relevant job experiences and education. They are generally used for securing an interview for a job when seeking employment. These one to two page summaries of a person’s life are extremely important as they are frequently the first thing seen by a potential employer. A CV is used more frequently for seeking employment in an academic or educational institution. Résumés are more geared toward seeking a job in the private sector. There are a few differences between CVs and résumés. One is the focus of the whole document. A résumé tends to be more descriptive as well as tailored for a specific purpose or target audience. CVs, on the other hand, are more concerned with presenting all data concerning a person in a compact, chronological fashion. There are three main types of résumés; chronological, functional, and combination. Chronological résumés list all of a person’s relevant work experience in reverse chronological order. This means that the person starts with their most recent place of employment and works backwards. Functional résumés sort a person’s work experience and skills by skill area or job function. These are designed to show a person’s expertise in a particular area rather than overall job experience. Combination résumés combine the features of functional and chronological résumés into one document. This style of organization generally leads with a functional list of job skills which is followed by a chronological list of employers. They tend to be repetitive and so are less widely used.
