Preparing for an Interview

The hiring process can be very stressful for people. Scavenging for a job, filling out applications, writing cover letters, tweaking resumes, giving interviews are all part of the process of being hired for almost any job. Although each step in the hiring process is important, interviewing carries with it a special significance because it involves face-to-face contact between a job seeker and an employer.

Job seekers usually understand this importance, but they may become confused about what they can do to prepare for the interview. Fortunately, there are a number of steps they can take to get themselves ready to ace their interview.

One relatively simple thing they should do is make sure that they have appropriate interview attire. An interview will usually be the first time an employer will see a potential employee, so it is crucial to make a good first impression by looking sharp.

Another thing a job hunter can do is to thoroughly research the companies at which she or he will be interviewing. Understandably, employers want to see what interviewees know about the companies to which they are applying. As a result, they may ask basic questions about the company that interviewees should be expected to know, like “What does [company X] do?”

Furthermore, job hunters can review common interview questions. Such questions are widely available on the internet or in job service organizations. Such a list usually consists of around 50 (give or take some) questions that interviewers are likely to ask. Interviewees should review these questions before interviews and develop answers to them before the interview so that their actual responses can be effective.

It also helps to find someone with whom to conduct a mock interview. A mock interview helps prepare an interviewer for an interview by giving her a preview of the interview so that she has a feel for what to expect.

These are some of the major ways that job seekers can prepare for an interview. Other methods are available as well.
